World's smallest transistor package "VML0806" starts mass production, contributing to miniaturization and high performance of smartphones
Publish time:2023-03-27     Reads:

Recently, leading Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Rohm (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan) has started mass production of the world's smallest* size transistor package "VML0806" (0.8mm x 0.6mm, height 0.36mm) for various electronic devices such as smartphones and digital cameras that require small and thin dimensions.

* According to a survey by Rohm (as of September 11, 2012)

Samples of this product are already being sold (sample price 80 yen per unit), and mass production will begin in July at a monthly production rate of 60 million units. Further expansion of production scale is planned in the future to meet the expanding market demand. The production bases are located at ROHM-Wako Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia) and ROHM Integrated Systems (Thailand) Co.

In recent years, the portable device market, including smartphones, has seen rapid growth in the miniaturization and high performance of the entire device, and the demand for smaller, thinner and lighter electronic components has increased. However, with the conventional transistor package, there are problems such as miniaturization of built-in components, stability of solid crystal, and processing accuracy of the package, as well as technical problems in mounting, etc. Therefore, the 1006 size (1.0mm × 0.6mm, height 0.37mm) is already the limit. We have developed the world's smallest transistor package "VML0806" (0.8mm x 0.6mm, height 0.36mm) by developing small components and introducing high-precision package processing technology. In addition, we have optimized the form factor and external pin size for better mounting performance and mass production.

The new package was first applied to small-signal MOSFETs. While maintaining the basic performance, the mounting area has been reduced by 67% and the thickness by 28% compared to the previous product in the smallest size 1212 package for small-signal transistors (1.2mm × 1.2mm, height 0.50mm). In the future, Rohm plans to expand the application area to a wider range of circuit uses such as bipolar transistors and digital transistors, which will help save space and achieve high density for various complete machines.

Features

(1) World's smallest size and significant reduction in mounting area Compared with the smallest size 1212 package (1.2 mm × 1.2 mm, height 0.50 mm) of previous small-signal transistors, the mounting area has been reduced by 67% and the thickness by 28%. As a transistor package has reached the world's smallest size.

(2) Has a high-density mounting back pin

(3) Low on-resistance in MOSFETs with the world's smallest size (2.6Ω).
